Europass CV: What It Is, Who Needs One, and How to Make It Free

What the Europass format is, which applications expect it, and the countries where sending one marks you out as an outsider.

A Europass CV is the European Union’s standard CV format, with a fixed structure and labelled sections covering personal information, work experience, education, language skills and digital skills. It exists so that employers across member states can compare applications in a consistent shape, and it is free to produce.

Who actually needs one

Use Europass when:

  • The advert asks for it by name — this is common in EU institutions and public sector roles
  • You are applying for Erasmus+, a European university place or an EU-funded programme
  • You are applying in a country where it remains conventional, including Italy, Romania, Poland, Greece and parts of Central Europe
  • You need your qualifications understood across borders, since the format includes standardised language levels

Do not use it when applying in the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada or Australia, or to most private companies in Germany, France or the Nordics, where a conventional CV is expected. In those markets a Europass CV reads as either foreign or bureaucratic, and it carries personal data those employers deliberately avoid holding.

What goes in each section

Personal information

Name, address, phone, email, and optionally date of birth, nationality, gender and a photograph. These fields are conventional in the format and would be a problem on a UK or US CV — which is exactly why the two are not interchangeable. Include only what the specific application asks for.

Work experience

Reverse chronological. Each entry carries dates, occupation or position held, main activities and responsibilities, employer name and address, and the type of business. It is more verbose than a standard CV by design.

Education and training

Same structure: dates, qualification title, organisation, and the principal subjects covered. Include the EQF level if you know it, since that is what makes qualifications comparable across countries.

Language skills

The most genuinely useful part of the format. Languages are rated against the CEFR scale — A1 to C2 — separately for listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production and writing. Be honest: these get tested. B2 means you can hold a working meeting; C1 means you can argue a point under pressure.

Digital skills

Rated across information processing, communication, content creation, safety and problem solving. Keep it factual and name real tools rather than claiming uniform excellence.

Length

Two to three pages is normal, which would be too long for a UK CV. The format’s structure accounts for it. Do not try to compress a Europass CV to one page — you break the layout the reader is expecting.

The main criticism, fairly stated

Europass CVs look identical to each other. The structure that makes them comparable also removes the room to stand out, and some private-sector recruiters find them tedious. That is a real trade-off, not a reason to ignore an explicit instruction: if an application asks for Europass, send Europass. If it does not, a standard CV usually serves you better.

Making one

The official EU tool is free. So is any builder that produces the same layout, which is often faster if you already have your content typed and want to switch formats without retyping. Our builder includes a Europass template that adds the personal-information fields only when you select it, so those fields never leak onto a CV bound for London or Toronto.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Europass CV?

A standard CV format created by the European Union, with a fixed structure and labelled sections covering personal information, work experience, education, language skills and digital skills. It exists so employers across member states can compare applications in a consistent form.

Is Europass still used in 2026?

Yes, though less universally than a decade ago. It remains common for EU institutions, public sector roles, Erasmus and university applications, and in countries including Italy, Romania, Poland and Greece. Many private employers now prefer a standard CV.

Should I use a Europass CV to apply in the UK or US?

No. A Europass CV looks out of place there and includes personal details, such as date of birth and a photo, that UK and US employers avoid holding. Use a standard one or two page CV instead.

Is Europass free?

Yes. The official EU tool is free, and so are third-party builders that produce the same layout. You should never pay for a Europass CV.
