A CV personal statement is a three-sentence paragraph at the top of your CV that says who you are professionally, what you are good at, and what you have achieved. Aim for 40 to 90 words, write it without pronouns, and rewrite it for each application so it echoes the job you are actually applying for.
The formula
- What you are and for how long. Job title plus years, plus the specialism that makes you specific.
- Your strongest proof. One achievement with a number in it.
- What you are aiming at. One clause connecting you to this role.
That is it. Three sentences. The reason it works is that it answers, in order, the three questions a recruiter is actually asking.

Backend engineer with six years building payment systems for high-volume marketplaces. Cut settlement latency 40% across two million daily transactions and led a fourteen-service migration with no downtime. Looking to move into a platform role with ownership of reliability.
Recent graduate
Economics graduate (First Class, Punjab University) with two internships in financial analysis. Built a forecasting model adopted by the finance team at Meezan Securities and presented findings to a room of twenty. Now looking for a graduate analyst position where the modelling work is central.
Career changer
Secondary school teacher moving into instructional design, with a completed Google UX certificate and three years redesigning the department’s Year 10 curriculum. Rebuilt the science scheme of work, lifting average attainment from a 4 to a 6. Bringing classroom-tested content design to a corporate learning team.
Returning after a break

First job, no experience

Phrases to delete
Every one of these appears on millions of CVs and carries no information:

- Results-driven team player
- Excellent communication skills
- Thinks outside the box
- Passionate about delivering excellence
- Seeking a challenging role in a dynamic organisation
The test: could the sentence appear on a competitor’s CV unchanged? If yes, it is doing nothing. Replace it with something only you could write.
Write it last
Fill in your experience first. The summary is a distillation of what is below it, and distilling something that does not exist yet is why people stare at a blank first paragraph for an hour.
Rewrite it per application

How long should a CV personal statement be?

Should a personal statement be written in the first person?
Write it without pronouns. ‘Backend engineer with six years in payments’ rather than ‘I am a backend engineer’. It is the convention on CVs and it saves words.
What is the difference between a personal statement and an objective?
A personal statement says what you offer. An objective says what you want. Employers are reading to find out what you offer, which is why objective statements have largely disappeared.
Do I need a personal statement if I have a cover letter?
Yes. Many applications never open the cover letter, and CVs get forwarded internally without it. The statement is your only guaranteed opening line.
