Explain an employment gap in a single line on your CV, in the same place a job would go, with dates and a short factual reason. An unexplained gap invites a recruiter to imagine the worst; an explained one closes the question and moves them on to your experience.
Why hiding it backfires
The instinct is to remove the dates, switch to a functional format, or list only years so a nine-month gap disappears inside “2023–2024”. Recruiters have seen all three for decades. Any of them makes an experienced reader look harder at your dates, which is the opposite of what you wanted.
A gap is a small question. Concealment turns it into a big one.
The one-line format
Treat it as an entry, in place, with dates:
Career break — March 2023 to January 2024
Full-time caring for a family member. Completed the Google Data Analytics certificate during this period.
Two lines. No apology, no elaboration. It reads as a person who has organised their life, which is the impression you want.
Wording for common situations

Short gaps need nothing
Under three months between roles is normal notice-period arithmetic and nobody asks. Do not draw attention to something invisible. Month-and-year dates make short gaps disappear on their own, which is one more reason to use them.
What to do during a current gap
If you are in one now, the most useful thing you can do this month is create something to put in it. A completed certification, ten hours a week of volunteering with real responsibility, or a small freelance project all convert an empty period into a line of evidence. It changes the conversation from “what happened” to “what did you do”.
The interview answer
Two sentences, then stop. “I took eight months out to care for my father after his surgery. He’s recovered, and I’ve been building back up with freelance work since March.” Anything longer signals discomfort where none is warranted.
Do not switch to a functional CV
